I don't know if anyone can help or offer advice. I used to live in Fargo, but now I live in a small town in western North Dakota where I work as a teacher. Well, the trouble is they do not offer many services for special needs children. I have a high functioning autistic 8 year old and have been battling the school for years. Two years ago and even last year they tried denying he was autistic. They said he was just bad. I had him re-evaluated in Minot and they said that he wa ... s autistic and ADHD. I have called an advocate who comes in to the IEP meetings, but still nothing is changing. The school sends my son home for everything and now his behavior is escalating to violence. I don't know what to do. They just keep saying he is bad, but he doesn't act that way anywhere else. August 31st they suspended him for a day because he refused to do an assignment. I refused to get him because they can't send him home for that, but then they threatened to call the police, so I had no choice. Then they suspended him because he kicked a child who was taunting him. And now his behavior is getting worse. I don't know what to do because I feel the adults who are supposed to be helping him are contributing to the problem. They treat him like he is a criminal and quite frankly I think they lie about him. Their documentation is by the minute which makes me question whether or not they can actually be trying to help him if they are writing things like: 8:52 Andy is being bad and ignoring the teacher. I told him to stop, but he wouldn't listen. 8:54 Andy is on the floor and refusing to work. . . I don't have time to document my classroom by the minute, how on earth do they manage that? I don't believe much of what the school says. It has been a nightmare trying to battle them and even worse because I work for the same district, but a different school. I am at a total loss about what to do. I love my students and like where I live, but I worry about my son. He went from the 99th and 98th percentile when he started kindergarten to below the 30th percentile now. They are not educating him and not even baby sitting him. It is so frustrating.
